This month, your trees are planted in 11 projects and 10 countries. Here is a brief update on some of them. It’s been a big planting month!
Ecosia in Australia - Reforest Now
  • In Australia, together with our partner Reforest Now, we are planting 100+ different native species to clean the air, sequester carbon, bring down temperatures, support biodiversity, and attract rain in areas that former functioned as dairy farms. We started planting trees in Australia in 2020, after parts of the rainforest in the Byron Bay area were devastated by fires. Our goal with this project is to make the area more resilient against future fires. These past months, the team was busy planting 20,000 new trees.
Ecosia in Rwanda - One Acre Fund
  • In Rwanda, together with our partner One Acre Fund we’re planting native trees with thousands of smallholder farmers. Planting trees on and around farms has many benefits. In rural Rwanda, the trees planted prevent erosion, increase soil fertility and water retention, and ultimately lead to higher, more predictable yields. This, in turn, means more food, income, and independence for local communities. Over the past months, the team was busy planting as many as 1,080,000 new trees.
Ecosia in Uganda - Partner: Kijani Forestry
  • In Uganda, together with our partner Kijani Forestry, we’re working with local communities to plant hundreds of thousands of biodiverse, native and fast-growing trees, some of which enrich the soil with nitrogen. After five years the trees can be harvested and regrown from the existing root structure. The goal of this project is to reverse deforestation via sustainable charcoal production, as the majority of Ugandans rely on charcoal or firewood harvested from national forests or on the private lands of impoverished farmers. These past months, 500,000 trees have been planted and 5 million seedlings have been prepared to be planted in the upcoming months.
Ecosia in Kenya - Partner: Mount Kenya Environmental Conservation
  • In Kenya, we are working with Mount Kenya Environmental Conservation (MKEC) where we are planting trees in the slopes of Mount Kenya (and primarily with women!) as well as supporting farmers who want to plant trees in agroforestry systems on their land. Over the past few months 225,000 new seedlings have been prepared by the team. Also in Kenya, this month, we started a new contract with our partner Trees 4 Humanity, to plant tree corridors that connect remaining forests, so that the savannah wildlife can safely move between them.
Ecosia in Sudan - Partner: Fair Agro Food
  • In Sudan, together with Fair Agro Food we are working with women-led groups to grow gum arabic trees. These trees will not only help reduce droughts and desertification, but also increase the income of thousands of Sudanese women who produce arabic gum under fair trade conditions. These past months, a mix of 167,176 acacia and fruit trees have been planted.
